Here’s the sketch I wrote about Trayvon Martin. During one of the performances, there was a moment of silence, followed by someone saying quietly, “that’s racist.” You tell me, is it?
The new episode of The Overshare is available over on our Facebook Page, but here’s part 1 as a teaser.
Did I mention I have funny friends? Check out Mike Dobbyn and Dale Mattison performing a perfectly executed quick cut costume change. Surprised I haven’t seen Dobbyn’s cop character more on stage, surprised and saddened.
Polonius Explodes
We took our name from a dumb bit of Shakespearean improvisation we did in Level 4. That just shows you how deep our shit runs. We’ve been together for a long time, and I made some great friends and collaborative partners with everybody in my Second City class. Getting into the improv scene has introduced me to some of the most interesting, amazing people in Chicago, and I’m grateful every day for deciding to hold my nose and take the plunge into this very scary, but very rewarding, endeavor.
We put together a show of the very best work that we had to offer, and the last show we played together brought the house down. I’ve never been more proud to share the stage with a group of friends, making dumb jokes, and taking my shirt off and swinging a fake medieval weapon.
We’ll all find ways to continue working together, but realistically that was the last time we’ll all be on stage together at the same time. I’m proud of the material, and I’m proud of the work that everybody did.
Love you guys.
Hello, Cruel World
Tonight is the very last show of my Conservatory run. The product of over a year of classes, friends, some stress, and a lot of fun. I’m extremely excited to get on stage with a great group of people and make my friends and family chuckle.
Come see us perform at the Second City’s ETC stage. 8 o’clock, 5 bucks, 1 hour. We’re going to have a great time!
—Overshare part 3
Hey guys! I’d like to introduce a new comedy podcast into the world of comedy podcasts, this is The Overshare, a project brought to you by myself, Alex Manich, and my friend James D’Amato. This is a rough cut of the third clip from our debut episode. We’re releasing it as a rough cut as a preview and teaser for the first episode. This is Ali Barthwell telling us about an inconvenience she recently experienced.
Twisty
This is going to be a roller-coaster of a post, so hold on. First, I’m very pleased to announce that I am lucky enough to be one of eight people who were cast for Twisty, which is the Second City House Ensemble. Twisty is essentially a farm system for work in the Second City theaters and companies, so it’s both incredibly exciting and incredibly scary.
Our first show was last night, and the fear got into me. Confidence is a funny, fleeting thing. I walked into the audition for this gig with my spine straight, sporting a confident saunter. Last night all of that was gone. Getting on Twisty had the opposite effect on me than it should have. I should be bursting with certainty, being cast as an affirmation that I deserve the job and that I can hang with the best of them, but instead I feel like somebody made a mistake. This is my bastard brain getting in the way.
This happened my first day of Conservatory class as well. I was scrambling to let everybody know that I’m funny and I deserve to be there, and in doing so, was not funny, and probably didn’t deserve to be there. I continued on, learned a lot, and a lot has changed since then. A lot will change now, it’s just a matter of adjusting my spine.
Good video describing a good photographer’s technique when taking headshots, but also important for those of us in front of the camera.
What’s most troubling to me about the use of “white people problems” as a jokey rejoinder is that it seems to imply that non-white people don’t use computers, or go to restaurants, or get cable TV, or exist in a world where our common, petty annoyances with such things apply.
